The first thing to do for an anemic baby is to give them breast milk, and for the mother to eat foods rich in fruits and vegetables for their vitamin and iron content. Dietary supplements will also be beneficial, such as spirulina, which is very good for iron intake; but it will also be good for her and the baby to consume camel milk, royal jelly, and honey.
Furthermore, the mother will be advised to give the baby fenugreek in powder or jam form, as was done in the past, or date jam or date molasses, which can also be found in syrup form for babies. It will therefore be important to get the baby used to these natural products.
If the baby is not breastfed, a supplement will need to be provided, such as barley, oats, millet, or spirulina as a dietary supplement in the form of grains mixed with other plants.
What the science says: iron and anemia in babies
What the published research says about the remedies mentioned above, for illustration purposes — the studies look at material causes; healing belongs to Allah.
In children
In infants, the probiotic Lactobacillus reuteri reduces colic crying according to a meta-analysis (Pediatrics, 2018) (Acta Paediatr, 2024); in children, honey soothes nighttime coughing (after age one) (Cochrane, 2018), fiber and hydration treat constipation (J Pediatr, 2022), and omega-3s are being studied for hyperactivity (Neuropsychopharmacology, 2018). Precaution: never give honey before age one, no essential oils before age 3 (age 6 for mint), doses adjusted to weight; any fever in an infant under 3 months is an emergency.
Iron and anemia
Iron bisglycinate effectively increases hemoglobin and ferritin with fewer digestive side effects than classic forms (Nutr Rev, 2023); in children, the optimal dose and duration have been clarified (PLoS One, 2025), and in pregnant women supplementation is studied according to iron status (Acta Obstet Gynecol Scand, 2023). Red meat, liver, lentils, dates, and spirulina, combined with vitamin C, are good sources. Precaution: do not supplement with iron without testing — excess is harmful; space it apart from tea and coffee, which block its absorption.
