What is Prophetic Medicine?

"Whatever belongs to Prophetic Medicine, being tied to his words (the Prophet's) 'alayhi As-Salam, there is no doubt that it is part of the revelation, and the Muslim has no choice (other than to accept) it, such as his words 'alayhi As-Salam: "The black seed is a cure for every disease." This is a statement concerning something unseen; the Messenger 'alayhi As-Salam could only speak of it through a revelation from heaven. That is why one cannot reject what is equivalent to this hadith, as some physicians do today. And among the greatest errors into which some physicians have fallen is their rejection of the hadith of the fly: "If a fly falls into the vessel of one of you, let him dip it in and then take it out, for one of its wings carries a disease and the other a cure."

And in some versions, when it falls, it falls on the wing carrying the disease. So they say (some physicians): these are things the Messenger learned from the Arabs. This is an error, because the hadith speaks of very precise matters. A sensible Muslim cannot venture into conjecture about the unseen, so how could one imagine that the Messenger would speak with such precision about this small creature, by blindly following the "Jahiliyya" (the period before the revelation to the Prophet ﷺ)!…"

"So it is fitting – O brothers – that we read. And by Allah, I would love to read and benefit from medicine, and indeed I tried, but I did not succeed. As for the young, they are capable, if there are among our young people those who are not fabricators. Arab medicine – even in "Najd" and the "Hijaz" (regions of Saudi Arabia) – may have been used by some of them for magic, deception and fabrication. So how great is our need for someone who studies plants and foods, and who advises his brothers, the Muslims, in this field."

"Confirmed (authentic) Prophetic Medicine is a truth and it is beneficial, and this does not prevent using the permitted medical remedies; the one does not prevent the other, you take this and that. All of this is part of what Allah has made as healing, as (the Prophet) ﷺ said:

"Allah has not sent down any disease without sending down its remedy. Some know it and some are unaware of it."

He ﷺ said: "Treat yourselves, and do not treat yourselves with what is forbidden."

So whatever is part of confirmed, beneficial medicine, there is no harm in taking it along with Prophetic Medicine. All of it is beneficial."

"And there is a book of great quality, and it is perhaps one of the most precious books: it is the book of Ibn al-Qayyim taken from his book "Zad al-Ma'ad." And in this book, known as "Prophetic Medicine," there is Prophetic Medicine, Arab medicine, and Greek medicine.

But you should know that not everything in this book is authentic. I mean that in the book, you see the practice of writing such and such a thing in a vessel and then drinking it. This is rejected…"
