The benefits of flaxseed

The benefits of flaxseed: the advice of Professor Akim Bouterra, complemented by what the research says (natural skin care, hair and hair loss, fiber and digestion), the precautions to know, and our resources to go further.

Extract of flaxseed has very beneficial properties, especially for the skin; indeed, it is used for soothing, hydrating, and restorative ointments. Flaxseeds are rich in polysaccharides, complex sugars that retain water in the skin, as well as in mucilage.

Its oil is beneficial, particularly for skin problems and inflammatory reactions, eczema, and psoriasis. Flaxseed oil can be combined with an aloe vera cream, for example. As for hair, this oil will restore its volume.

The seeds can be used in poultices, ground, and combined with olive oil and lavender. Paired with chamomile oil, they will be an excellent remedy against eczema and psoriasis.

Creams made from flaxseed are used because they are rich in omega-3s and alpha-linolenic acid.

There is also flax gel. Rich in omega-3s and with a viscous texture, it will be ideal for deeply nourishing the hair, while giving it shine and softness. Combined with argan and olive oil, it will be excellent for the skin.

In terms of diet, flaxseed will be used to treat hemorrhoids, constipation, or even hypothyroidism.

What the science says: natural skin care, hair and hair loss, fiber and digestion

What published research says about the remedies mentioned above, for context — these studies address material causes; healing belongs to Allah.

Natural skin care

Aloe vera promotes healing and soothes the skin according to a review of clinical trials (Iran J Med Sci, 2019) (Plast Reconstr Surg, 2018); in eczema, daily moisturizing with emollients is the foundation of treatment (Int J Dermatol, 2025) and the skin microbiome plays a central role (J Eur Acad Dermatol Venereol, 2023). Olive oil, black seed oil, honey, and shea butter are the traditional emollients. Precaution: test any new product on a small area for 24 hours; a lesion that spreads, oozes, or becomes infected should be seen by a doctor.

Hair and hair loss

Natural topical remedies for hair loss have been reviewed — rosemary oil, caffeine, and scalp massage with plant oils are among the most studied (Int J Trichology, 2025); a global review catalogs the plants used by menopausal women (Front Pharmacol, 2025). Iron, zinc, protein, and vitamin D should be checked in cases of significant hair loss. Precaution: sudden or patchy hair loss requires a workup (thyroid, iron, deficiencies); results from natural care take 3 to 6 months.

Fiber and digestion

A meta-analysis in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition confirms that fiber supplementation improves stool frequency and chronic constipation in adults (Am J Clin Nutr, 2022); in children, non-drug approaches are validated (J Pediatr, 2022). Vegetables, whole fruits, legumes, barley, flaxseed, or psyllium are good sources. Precaution: increase intake gradually and drink more water — fiber without enough water can worsen constipation; avoid enemas and purges without medical advice (Am J Gastroenterol, 2009).
