Natural remedies for gallstones

Natural remedies for gallstones: Professor Akim Bouterra's advice, complemented by what the research says (liver, kidneys, and urinary tract), the precautions to know, and our resources to go further.

To begin with, olive oil will be beneficial for those suffering from gallstones. The patient will consume one tablespoon on an empty stomach in the morning, and will cook with it. They also made sure to eat easily digestible foods, such as vegetables boiled in water with cumin and a small amount of ginger. In addition, rosemary will also help with healing, and it will be consumed as an herbal tea or applied as a massage twice a day, in oil form, at the location where the gallbladder is found. And finally, Orthosiphon, which can be found in capsules, and a source of polyphenols such as flavonoids, will also be a remedy against gallstones.

What the science says: liver, kidneys, and urinary tract

What published research says about the remedies mentioned above, for illustration purposes — these studies address material causes, but healing belongs to Allah.

The liver

Silymarin from milk thistle improves liver markers in fatty liver disease and various liver conditions according to meta-analyses (Ann Hepatol, 2024) (World J Gastroenterol, 2017); the Mediterranean diet (olive oil, vegetables, fish) reduces liver fat (Clin Nutr, 2022). Artichoke, black radish, rosemary, and dandelion are the traditional detoxifiers; fasting gives the liver a rest. Precaution: viral hepatitis or cirrhosis should be followed with a specialist; some plants are hepatotoxic (comfrey, greater celandine, kava) — do not improvise.

Kidneys and urinary tract

Cranberry reduces the risk of recurrent urinary tract infections in some people according to a Cochrane review (Explore, 2024); for kidney stones, abundant hydration and dietary measures (citrate, less salt and animal protein) are the best-supported approaches (Minerva Urol Nephrol, 2025) (Arch Ital Urol Androl, 2015). Java tea (orthosiphon), cherry stems, and birch have diuretic effects. Precaution: a urinary infection with fever or lower back pain is pyelonephritis — antibiotics are essential; in cases of kidney failure, do not take diuretic herbs or magnesium/potassium without medical advice.
