Prophetic Medicine is not opposed to modern medicine

Some people claim that Prophetic Medicine is opposed to modern medicine, that it bans everything related to surgery or the use of medications: this is a serious mistake.

Indeed, our Imam Ibn al-Qayyim relied himself on the statements of the physicians of his time, and even cited their theory known as "the theory of the humors." Prophetic Medicine is in no way opposed to modern medicine, and the Prophet ﷺ himself had his own physician, who was Persian.

The most important thing, when illness strikes, is to seek the remedy among those that Allah has created, and modern medicine is a full part of that. However, one must seek the treatment that will cause the least harm to our body. Moreover, even modern physicians are attached to plant-based medicine or dietetics; they are not opposed to them.

Furthermore, how could we ban something that comes from our own heritage? Indeed, surgery has its roots in the medicine of Andalusia and Baghdad. However, everyone is free to choose the treatment that suits them. Modern medicine has contributed a great deal, particularly in the field of bacteriology or the anatomy of the human body. Does Allah not say "Ask those who possess knowledge if you do not know"? Indeed, the scholars said regarding this verse that physicians were included among them.

Furthermore, Prophetic Medicine draws its sources first from the Qur'an and the Sunnah, then from our scholars and our Muslim physicians. Islam urges us to consult a physician when needed, following the example of the Prophet ﷺ. Islam in no way forbids modern medicine and the means of seeking a cure, and surgery is one of them, since it too was created by Allah to allow man to heal.

The essential thing in seeking remedies and treatments is that they be lawful. Prophetic Medicine does not go against modern medicine, and it even encourages progress, since Allah has permitted it; and the Prophet ﷺ said regarding illness and remedies: "Allah has not sent down an illness without sending down its remedy along with it." Authentic hadith (Sahih) - Authenticated by Sheikh al-Albani in "as-Silsila as-Sahiha - no. 451." Moreover, the Prophet's ﷺ own physician, al-Harith ibn Kalada, practiced in Yemen, and within a Persian academy.
