Remedies for a difficult early pregnancy

Remedies for a difficult early pregnancy: the advice of Professor Akim Bouterra, complemented by what the research says (pregnancy), the precautions to know, and our resources to go further.

Sometimes the early weeks of pregnancy can be very difficult: vomiting, excess salivation, sciatica, and severe fatigue can even lead to hospitalization.

The first step is to address the vomiting. Peppermint is an excellent ally here, whether as a capsule or a tea. Dried ginger extract in powder form is also very effective. In addition, it's best to favor foods rich in protein rather than carbohydrates, and to avoid strong, spicy flavors that can upset the stomach. Bananas, rice, and applesauce can be part of the pregnant woman's diet.

In addition, spirulina can help restore some strength and is beneficial for its minerals and vitamins. This can be combined with taking vitamin B6.

As for beverages, it's best to favor juices as much as possible, along with ginger and lemon herbal teas.

Posture can also play a role, so it's best to avoid bending forward, so as not to put pressure on the stomach, and to keep the back straight.

Finally, in case of severe pain from sciatica, a turmeric-based ointment can be used.

What the science says: pregnancy

What published research says about the remedies mentioned above, for context — these studies concern material causes; healing belongs to Allah.

Pregnancy

Ginger is the go-to natural remedy for pregnancy nausea (J Matern Fetal Neonatal Med, 2022) (J Am Board Fam Med, 2014); dates in late pregnancy ease labor (Explore, 2021); iron and folic acid are monitored (Acta Obstet Gynecol Scand, 2023). Precaution: many plants are not recommended during pregnancy (essential oils, hormonal plants, purgatives, fenugreek) — do not take any supplement without the advice of a midwife or doctor.
