Remedies to improve kidney function

Remedies to improve kidney function: Professor Akim Bouterra's advice, complemented by what research says (kidneys and urinary tract, medicinal mushrooms), the precautions to know, and our resources to go further.

According to the tradition of the Prophet ﷺ, the Arabs of the Arabian Peninsula made great use of the truffle. Today, two very effective mushrooms are also found for kidney function, particularly kidney failure. One is the Chinese mushroom reishi, which is an antioxidant and known for boosting immunity. It contains adenosine, which gives it its properties for improving kidney function. The second mushroom, native to the Himalayas, is called cordyceps.

To address the lack of iron, minerals, vitamin B12, and others, which is often the cause of kidney problems, there is spirulina.

Ginseng is also very effective for fighting the weakness experienced by people with kidney failure.

In addition, there is now a remedy called renalyse, which combines the four remedies mentioned above. The patient can take two capsules twice a day before meals.

What the science says: kidneys and urinary tract, medicinal mushrooms

What published research says about the remedies mentioned above, for context — the studies address material causes; healing belongs to Allah.

Kidneys and urinary tract

Cranberry reduces the risk of recurrent urinary tract infections in some people according to a Cochrane review (Explore, 2024); for kidney stones, abundant hydration and diet (citrate, less salt and animal protein) are the best-supported measures (Minerva Urol Nephrol, 2025) (Arch Ital Urol Androl, 2015). Java tea (orthosiphon), cherry stems, and birch have a draining effect. Precaution: a urinary tract infection with fever or lower back pain is pyelonephritis — antibiotics are essential; in case of kidney failure, do not take diuretic plants or magnesium/potassium without medical advice.

Medicinal mushrooms

Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) and other medicinal mushrooms contain beta-glucans and triterpenes with immunomodulatory effects, critically reviewed (Phytother Res, 2021) (Biomolecules, 2022) (Molecules, 2023) — hence their place in the immune-support courses recommended by the professor. Precaution: quality and origin should be verified; caution with immunosuppressive treatment, anticoagulants, or before surgery; courses of 2 to 3 months rather than continuous use.
