Natural remedies for menstrual pain and cramps

Natural remedies for menstrual abdominal pain: the advice of Professor Akim Bouterra, complemented by what the research says (menstrual cramps and cycle), the precautions to know, and our resources to go further.

Ginger, a natural anti-inflammatory, used together with mint as well as lemon will be effective against pain caused by menstruation. Chamomile, and especially Roman chamomile, can also help with menstrual pain. It can be taken in capsules or as an herbal tea. If, in addition to these menstrual issues, other symptoms occur, two plants used by the Arabs can be used: evening primrose and borage, in oil form.

What the science says: painful periods and the cycle

What published research says about the remedies mentioned above, for context — the studies concern material causes; healing belongs to Allah.

Painful periods and the cycle

Ginger reduces period pain according to several meta-analyses (J Integr Complement Med, 2024) (Cureus, 2021), as do cinnamon and fennel (J Int Med Res, 2020); magnesium and omega-3s help with premenstrual syndrome, and an anti-inflammatory diet reduces endometriosis pain (Eur J Obstet Gynecol Reprod Biol, 2022). Precaution: very heavy, very painful, or irregular periods deserve a medical evaluation (endometriosis, fibroid, PCOS, thyroid); chasteberry and sage act on hormones — seek medical advice if you are on medication.
