Remedies for premenstrual syndrome (PMS)

Remedies for premenstrual syndrome: Professor Akim Bouterra's advice, complemented by what research says (painful periods and the cycle, medicinal plants), the precautions to know, and our resources to go further.

Sometimes, as their period approaches, women can become very irritable to the point of no longer being able to tolerate their family, and very exhausted.

To address this, herbs that help regulate the hormonal system are recommended, such as oregano, marjoram, or sage, in the form of herbal teas or capsules.

The ideal herb, however, remains chasteberry (vitex), which can be combined with sage for even greater effectiveness. It is recommended to take it as a course, which should be stopped during the menstrual period.

Indeed, during the menstrual period, it is better to opt for chamomile, ginger, and lemon herbal teas instead.

In addition, to help fight irritability, rhodiola and saffron are recommended in the morning, and in the evening, two to three cups of linden herbal tea along with two valerian capsules.

What the science says: painful periods and cycle, medicinal plants

What published research says about the remedies mentioned above, for informational purposes — these studies concern material causes; healing belongs to Allah.

Painful periods and cycle

Ginger reduces period pain according to several meta-analyses (J Integr Complement Med, 2024) (Cureus, 2021), as do cinnamon and fennel (J Int Med Res, 2020); magnesium and omega-3s help with premenstrual syndrome, and an anti-inflammatory diet reduces endometriosis pain (Eur J Obstet Gynecol Reprod Biol, 2022). Precaution: very heavy, very painful or irregular periods warrant a checkup (endometriosis, fibroid, PCOS, thyroid); chasteberry and sage act on hormones — seek medical advice if you are under treatment.

Medicinal plants: using them properly

Moringa, for example, has shown an effect on blood sugar according to a meta-analysis (Molecules, 2021), and its safety has been reviewed (Phytother Res, 2015); more generally, plants act — so they interact: the review of plants against anxiety (Pharmacol Res, 2022) or against painful periods (J Int Med Res, 2020) points this out. Precaution: respect the doses, avoid mixing many plants together, check compatibility with your treatments, pregnancy or breastfeeding; buy quality plants from a controlled source.
