8 rules the Messenger of Allah ﷺ kept to preserve his health

8 rules the Messenger of Allah ﷺ kept to preserve his health: the teaching of Professor Akim Bouterra, complemented by what research says (painful periods and the cycle), the precautions to know, and our resources to go further.

We certainly have in the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ the best path to preserve one's moral and physical health.
Indeed, Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى informed us that (the Prophet ﷺ) represents a good example (to follow) for his community. Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى says (approximate translation): "Indeed, you have in the Messenger of Allah an excellent example (to follow), for whoever hopes in Allah and the Last Day and invokes Allah frequently" Surah 33, verse 21.

Here are 8 rules that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ put into practice to safeguard his health:

1 – Choosing fruits and vegetables that are in season and local.
2 – Opting for a diet made up of fresh products.
3 – Eating a light, modest diet.
4 – Eating foods free of toxins.
5 – Rebalancing one's diet and favoring homemade cooking.
6 – Doing one's grocery shopping on a full stomach to avoid any impulse buying, just as drinking water before meals reduces the appetite, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ still took care to respect his own preferences and habits.
7 – Adopting a healthy diet over the long term.
8 – Eating slowly and chewing well during meals, making sure the environment is calm and free of stress.

So remember to vary your diet, and don't forget the advice of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: "fill one's stomach with 1/3 water, 1/3 food, and 1/3 air."

Observe voluntary days of fasting, such as Mondays and Thursdays, or the three white days of each month, in order to regenerate the body and clear out all toxic waste from it.

And respect the proper portion of meals: eat well in the morning, properly at midday, and lightly in the evening.

What the science says: menstrual pain and the cycle

What published research says about the remedies mentioned above, for context — these studies examine material causes, while healing belongs to Allah.

Menstrual pain and the cycle

Ginger reduces menstrual pain according to several meta-analyses (J Integr Complement Med, 2024) (Cureus, 2021), as do cinnamon and fennel (J Int Med Res, 2020); magnesium and omega-3s help with premenstrual syndrome, and an anti-inflammatory diet reduces endometriosis pain (Eur J Obstet Gynecol Reprod Biol, 2022). Precaution: very heavy, very painful, or irregular periods deserve a medical evaluation (endometriosis, fibroids, PCOS, thyroid); chasteberry and sage act on hormones — seek medical advice if you are under treatment.
