Telltale signs of a vitamin deficiency

Telltale signs of a vitamin deficiency: the advice of Professor Akim Bouterra, complemented by what research says (vitamin D, stress and anxiety), the precautions to know, and our resources to go further.

Vitamins are an essential energy source for human health, and each vitamin fulfills a specific function and meets a need of the body.

Indeed, vitamins are found in many fruits and vegetables, which is why it's important to vary one's diet to offset a possible deficiency, which can be the cause of illness.

Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ made sure to vary his diet to maintain his nutritional balance and preserve his health.

How can we know we're deficient in vitamins, since vitamin needs vary from person to person?

  • Vitamin B deficiencies can show up as nervous system disorders, muscular disorders, and possibly heart problems.
  • Iron deficiency occurs when a person is anemic.
  • Fatigue and lowered immunity reveal a deficiency in vitamin C, zinc, and selenium.
  • Skin, hair, and nail problems reveal a lack of vitamin A.
  • Magnesium deficiency shows up as a state of stress and anxiety.
  • Joint pain points to a vitamin D deficiency.

What the science says: vitamin D, stress and anxiety

Here is what published research says about the remedies mentioned above, for context only — the studies address material causes, while healing belongs to Allah.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D supplementation reduces the risk of acute respiratory infections, especially in people who are deficient, according to a meta-analysis in the BMJ (BMJ, 2017) updated since then (Lancet Diabetes Endocrinol, 2025); a deficiency is also linked to autoimmune diseases (Nutrients, 2023). Sunlight remains the primary source. Precaution: have your vitamin D level tested before taking high-dose supplements — excess amounts are toxic; standard maintenance doses are safe.

Stress and anxiety

Chronic stress raises blood pressure and inflammation, and contributes to triggering many diseases (Arthritis Res Ther, 2010); conversely, calming plants (CNS Drugs, 2013), physical activity, and good sleep reduce anxiety. The first remedy remains that of the heart — dhikr, prayer, trust in Allah — which the professor places above all others. Precaution: anxiety that takes over daily life, panic attacks, or persistent waswas warrant psychological support consistent with your values.
