How to apply honey to heal your skin

How to apply honey to heal your skin?: the advice of Professor Akim Bouterra, complemented by what research says (honey, natural skin care, wounds, burns, and scars), the precautions to know, and our resources to go further.

Chestnut honey, thyme honey, or even better, manuka honey will be very effective for healing the skin. It can be applied directly to the skin, on a regular basis, mixed with pure propolis.

However, be careful not to apply store-bought honey that is mostly composed of sugar.

In addition, there are healing creams based on honey, or also with castor oil, which will also be very effective.

What the science says: honey, natural skin care, wounds, burns and scars

What published research says about the remedies mentioned above, for illustration purposes only — the studies deal with material causes, healing belongs to Allah.

Honey

"There is a healing for people in honey": research confirms several of its uses. The Cochrane review concludes that honey relieves acute cough in children better than no treatment and at least as well as certain syrups (Cochrane, 2018) (Eur J Pediatr, 2023). On the skin, honey dressings speed up healing and reduce wound infections (Nutrients, 2024), including burns (N Z Med J, 2009). Precaution: never give honey before age one (risk of infant botulism); choose raw, unheated honey from a trustworthy source.

Natural skin care

Aloe vera promotes healing and soothes the skin according to a review of clinical trials (Iran J Med Sci, 2019) (Plast Reconstr Surg, 2018); in eczema, daily moisturizing with emollients is the foundation of treatment (Int J Dermatol, 2025) and the skin microbiome plays a central role (J Eur Acad Dermatol Venereol, 2023). Olive oil, black seed oil, honey and shea butter are the traditional emollients. Precaution: test any new product on a small area for 24 hours; a lesion that spreads, oozes or becomes infected calls for a doctor.

Wounds, burns and scars

Honey speeds up the healing of burns according to a meta-analysis (N Z Med J, 2009) and of chronic wounds (Nutrients, 2024); aloe vera (Iran J Med Sci, 2019), propolis (Arch Dermatol Res, 2023) and rosehip oil (J Cosmet Dermatol, 2024) support skin repair. Precaution: an extensive or deep burn, or one on the face, and a dirty or infected wound are emergencies; honey and oils are applied to a clean wound.
