Imam Ibn al-Qayyim mentioned oregano in his book on Prophetic Medicine, and describes it as hot in the third degree and dry in the second degree, and good for most swellings and cold, damp pains. And if it is tolerated, it brings on menstruation and helps with pregnancy. Also found in the phytoestrogen family are marjoram and sage.

Menopause

Sage, red clover, black cohosh, and soy have been evaluated against hot flashes, with variable but real results for some women (Adv Nutr, 2025); exercise, calcium, and vitamin D protect bones after menopause (JAMA Netw Open, 2019), and plants used for menopausal hair loss have been reviewed (Front Pharmacol, 2025). Precaution: plants with an estrogenic effect are not recommended for women with a history of hormone-dependent cancer — ask your doctor for advice.
