How to do a steam inhalation

How to do a steam inhalation: the advice of Professor Akim Bouterra, complemented by what the research says (essential oils), the precautions to know, and our resources to go further.

Inhalations provide immediate relief, especially for ENT problems.

To prepare an inhalation, heat water until simmering, pour it into an inhaler or a bowl, then add a few drops of essential oils.

For phlegm, choose eucalyptus; thyme is ideal for a cough, but you can also add Indian costus, black seed oil, honey, lemon, or marjoram essential oil; every condition has an essential oil that can treat it. Indeed, Allah affirmed that every illness has its remedy; it is up to us to seek it out.

After preparing your inhalation, position yourself above the inhaler or bowl, placing a towel over your head, and breathe normally for about ten minutes. Once the inhalation is finished, you will need to wipe your face and nose.

What the science says: essential oils

What published research says about the remedies mentioned above, for context — these studies concern material causes, while healing belongs to Allah.

Essential oils

Tea tree essential oil has documented effectiveness for acne (Antioxidants, 2023), peppermint oil for irritable bowel syndrome (Aliment Pharmacol Ther, 2022), lavender and others for anxiety (Pharmacol Res, 2022) — but these are powerful concentrates. Precaution: always dilute on the skin, never use in the eyes or undiluted by mouth without medical advice; several of them are forbidden for pregnant women (unless advised otherwise), children under 3 (under 6 for peppermint), asthmatics, and people with epilepsy.
