Moringa for the skin

Moringa for the skin: Professor Akim Bouterra's advice, complemented by what the research says (medicinal plants, hair and hair loss), the precautions to know, and our resources to go further.

Rich in vitamins, minerals, and amino acids, moringa has many nutritional qualities. It is also a superfood, just like spirulina, which is very beneficial in cosmetics, particularly for hair and facial masks.

Moringa is used both internally and externally. It can be consumed as an herbal tea, in capsule form, as a powder, or mixed into food.

In cosmetology, it is also an ingredient of choice for revitalizing dull skin. It can be used alone or mixed with green or white clay. It is also an ally for purifying blemishes and stimulating hair growth.

Here is a recipe for a facial mask:

– one tablespoon of moringa powder

– one teaspoon of honey (acacia or manuka)

– one teaspoon of vegetable oil (jojoba preferably, or otherwise argan or olive)

– a little floral water (rose water)

– optional: one to two drops of tea tree essential oil

What the science says: medicinal plants, hair and hair loss

What the published research says about the remedies mentioned above, for context — the studies address material causes, while healing belongs to Allah.

Medicinal plants: using them properly

Moringa, for example, has shown an effect on blood sugar according to a meta-analysis (Molecules, 2021) and its safety has been reviewed (Phytother Res, 2015); more generally, plants act — and therefore interact: the review of plants against anxiety (Pharmacol Res, 2022) or against painful periods (J Int Med Res, 2020) is a reminder of this. Precaution: respect the doses, avoid mixing many plants together, check compatibility with your medications, pregnancy or breastfeeding; buy quality plants from a controlled source.

Hair and hair loss

Natural topical remedies for hair loss have been reviewed — rosemary oil, caffeine, and vegetable oils massaged into the scalp are among the most studied (Int J Trichology, 2025); a global review catalogs the plants used by menopausal women (Front Pharmacol, 2025). Iron, zinc, protein and vitamin D should be checked in cases of significant hair loss. Precaution: sudden hair loss or loss in patches requires a medical workup (thyroid, iron, deficiencies); results from natural care take 3 to 6 months.
