Cleansing your lungs after quitting smoking

Cleansing your lungs after quitting smoking: Professor Akim Bouterra's advice, along with what research says (breaking free of an addiction, detox and drainage, mouth and teeth), the precautions to know, and our resources to go further.

Noni syrup has an active component that will help with quitting smoking, while also helping to make up for the deficiencies linked to it. To do this, the course should last four months, at a rate of three capsules per day. When taking noni juice, it's best to start with a small teaspoon in the morning on an empty stomach with water, juice or honey, and to gradually increase the dose up to a tablespoon, over three months.

Pineapple, orange and lemon juices, as well as thyme, oregano and eucalyptus herbal teas, will also be very beneficial.

Alongside this, three cordyceps capsules per day should be taken for three months.

Finally, it will be important to pay particular attention to oral hygiene, notably by using siwak as well as toothpaste and oral hygiene products containing siwak.

What the science says: breaking free from dependence, detox and drainage, mouth and teeth

What published research says about the remedies mentioned above, for context—these studies address material causes, while healing belongs to Allah.

Breaking free from dependence

Smoking cessation relies on structured support whose effectiveness is well established across the Cochrane reviews (Tob Induc Dis, 2024); calming plants (valerian, passionflower) and exercise help get through withdrawal, with physical activity also protecting mood. Islam offers a powerful framework: sincere intention, supplication, supportive company, replacing a habit with a good deed. Precaution: abruptly stopping alcohol in a heavy drinker can be dangerous (seizures)—it should be done under a doctor's supervision; do not hesitate to seek support.

Detox and drainage

The body "detoxifies" itself through the liver, kidneys, intestines, skin, and lungs: supporting these organs comes through fiber (Am J Clin Nutr, 2022), hydration, fasting (BMJ, 2025), liver-supporting plants like milk thistle (World J Gastroenterol, 2017), and physical activity. Aggressive "cleanses" have no demonstrated benefit and carry risks (Am J Gastroenterol, 2009). Precaution: no purges or enemas without medical advice, and no detox course during pregnancy; heavy-metal "chelators" should only be used on prescription.

Mouth and teeth

Siwak reduces plaque and gum inflammation (Saudi Med J, 2015) (J Ethnopharmacol, 2022); propolis is being studied for oral health (J Funct Biomater, 2024), and honey for mouth sores. Salt-water rinses, clove for tooth pain, less sugar: the basics. Precaution: a cavity, an abscess, or gums that bleed persistently need a dentist—natural remedies bring relief in the meantime, they do not repair the problem.
